Writing and Editing
I have nearly 20 years of experience as a professional editor and writer. As a freelance or contract professional, I have worked with such companies as Google, The University of Chicago Press, and Boeing, but primarily I have worked on a variety of materials for Microsoft.
In the years I've worked as a professional editor and writer, I’ve gained extensive experience working on many types of content, including highly technical programmer documentation, user help and documentation, Web content, marketing material, and white papers, as well as book-length manuscripts. (NOTE: I cannot supply samples of most of this work due to non-disclosure agreements about proprietary content, but I am more than happy to answer any questions about the specifics of what I can do.)
I understand the process of tailoring information for a specific audience and delivery method, including how to consider globalization and internationalization issues. I can edit at different levels, from developmental editing, through content and copy editing, down to proofreading, choosing the appropriate level as required. I'm also comfortable with publishing management tasks, such as following and creating style guides and similar standards, as well as workflow tracking, version control, and work procedure development. My language skills are top-notch, I work quickly and accurately, and I’m known for my commitment to performing above the standard.

E-learning content is an area of focus for me. I’ve worked on educational courseware and supporting content in several formats, most recently with the Applied Digital Skills team at Google. In this role, I took ideas for lessons and designed the lessons, primarily in the form of scripts for video production. I scoped the lessons and decided what information to cover, then produced outlines and notes for other writers to flesh out. After the scripts were written, I did developmental and content edit on them, changing content when necessary and testing the demonstration procedures. I can't provide samples of the scripts due to contract constraints, but some lessons I designed and edited have been published at the Applied Digital Skills Personal Projects Collection (applieddigitalskills.withgoogle.com/en/personalprojects).
At McGraw-Hill Education, I consulted on applying instructional design principles and best practices to digital content for elementary school classroom use. I also co-led a team to develop an internal employee education project from the ground up, including concepting, designing, writing, building, and revising content, as well as publishing courseware and managing metadata using proprietary tools and systems.
Previously, I helped develop class lesson modules for the Microsoft Official Curriculum and articles for the Microsoft Knowledge Base, used by support professionals worldwide.

In 2006, I acted as a developmental and copy editor for Mind Performance Hacks by Ron Hale-Evans, a book of techniques for strengthening memory, stimulating creativity, managing time and attention, and otherwise improving mental skills. I wrote two chapters as well. Mind Performance Hacks has sold about 100,000 copies worldwide (as of Fall 2017), translated into six languages.
In 2011, I co-developed, co-wrote, and co-edited Mindhacker with Ron Hale-Evans, a second volume of mental techniques that expanded on some ideas in Mind Performance Hacks as well as teaching many new techniques. Mindhacker has sold approximately 35,000 copies to date. |
I have served as a managing editor for Healing Mountain Publishing, a small publishing house specializing in educational materials. My role included editing textbooks and revamping and streamlining the company's editing and publishing workflow, as well as managing and coordinating the production process with authors, content editors, developmental editors, proofreaders, typesetters, and publishers.
